It was on Monday the International Olympic Committee, IOC officially introduced breakdancing as a new sports program for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. The introduction of breakdancing is mainly aimed to attract younger viewers.
Apart from breakdancing, IOC also confirmed the addition of skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing for the Paris Games. The three sports will be introduced in the upcoming 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympics on a preliminary basis. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Tokyo Olympics games got postponed and thus the above sports programs remain untested and thereby received approval for 2024 to help Paris ready its facilities.
Breakdancing is a youth-driven sport largely comprised and has active participation of teenagers and people in their early 20s. The United States has been dominant in International B-Boy championships, where the Netherlands, South Korea, and the United Kingdom also have expertise in the sport.
American dancer Logan “Logistx,” Edra told Tim Baker of Sky:
“It can resonate with a lot of people because hip hop culture resonates with a lot of people, hip hop music resonates with a lot of people”.
The IOC is looking to welcome more youth-laden sports to attract a new audience as Olympic ratings in recent years have experienced a sizeable dip in terms of viewership.
