Top Olympic Canoe Sprinters at Tokyo 2021

European countries have dominated the Canoe Sprint Championship since the beginning. At the Rio 2016 event, Hungary won three, while Germany claimed three out of the six titles. Brazil, New Zealand, and China too are evolving as the competing nations at the international podiums. Lisa Carrington is the double women Olympic champion and this time she is aiming for her third consecutive K1200 m gold medal. Also, she is eyeing to clinch a bronze medal in the K1 500m. Another strong contender, Danuta Kozak is a five-time Olympic champion and she too is hoping to make a strong comeback from her poor performance at the 2019 World Championship.

Nevin Harrison from the USA is all set to make her debut at the upcoming Tokyo Olympic games. She has won the women’s C1 200m at the 2019 World Championship. Also, she is named as the first American to won a Canoe Sprint world title. In the Men’s category, Josef Dostal a star performer from the Czech Republic is also aiming to get better than his previous Rio 2016 Silver medal in the K1 1000 m.

Ed McKeever and Liam Heath from Great Britain are the great paddlers to clinch back-to-back gold medals in the men’s K1 200m event in London 2012 and Rio 2016 championship. Sebastian Brendel is the two-time Olympic gold medallist in the men’s C1 1000m event and there are huge expectations from him at the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Olympic Canoe Sprint Competition Format at Tokyo 2021

Canoe Sprint Competition comprises two types of crafts the Kayak (K) and Canoe ©. Kayak paddlers sit in a boat with a double paddle. The rider has to steer with their feet controlling a rudder. The canoe uses a paddle with a blade at one end. There is a total of 12 events at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games that include Kayak Singles, doubles, and four races. In Canoeing there are only double and single races. Competitors have to cover a distance of 200m, 500m, and 1,000m.

The competition is quite interesting and enduring where all boats line up and start the race at the same time. A paddler needs to balance themselves at the starting point and had to remain stable until the starter’s signal. The 200m is the fastest race in the sports program, where the men’s kayak race the distance in approximately 30 seconds. The top eight boats march towards Group A final in the semi-final round. The remaining will compete in the Group B final.
