A Brief History of Olympic Soccer

Men’s football featured in all of the Summer Olympic Games since 1900, except for the 1932 Los Angeles games. In the 1920s, Uruguay showed its dominance by winning gold medals in the 1924 and 1928 games which eventually lead them to the hosting of the first-ever FIFA World Cup 1930 tournament.

Since then they have won two World Cups in 1930 and 1950 and two Olympic Gold medals. The women’s Football team participated officially in the Olympic Games from 1996 events. The United States has dominated the games with four gold medals out of six. In the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Germany won a gold medal but failed to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
