Tokyo being the host city for the Olympics 2021 tournament, most of the matches are scheduled in Tokyo and surrounding cities of Yokohama, Saitama, Kashima, and North in Sendai. Also, some matches will take place in Sapporo, the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

Olympic Soccer Competition Format at Tokyo 2021 Summer Olympic
The Men’s Football Competition is split into four games of four in “robin round” comprising of 16 teams. The top two performing teams from each group will qualify for the Knock out round of the tournament, beginning with the quarterfinals. The two losing teams in the semi-final round will contest for the bronze medal match which will take place a day before the gold medal match on Saturday 7th of August.
There will be 12 teams in the Women’s football competition, divided into three groups of four. The two teams from each of the four groups will proceed to the quarterfinal round and the remaining two to the two best third-placed teams from the first round. It follows the same schedule as that of the men’s competition that will take place on Friday 7th of August.

A Brief History of Olympic Soccer
Men’s football featured in all of the Summer Olympic Games since 1900, except for the 1932 Los Angeles games. In the 1920s, Uruguay showed its dominance by winning gold medals in the 1924 and 1928 games which eventually lead them to the hosting of the first-ever FIFA World Cup 1930 tournament.
Since then they have won two World Cups in 1930 and 1950 and two Olympic Gold medals. The women’s Football team participated officially in the Olympic Games from 1996 events. The United States has dominated the games with four gold medals out of six. In the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Germany won a gold medal but failed to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
